Program Overview
At PULSE (Promoting Unity & Leadership for Social Empowerment), we believe in the power of collaboration and the impact of unified efforts in addressing global challenges. Our latest initiative, ” EcoLens: Environmental Journalism Training,” is a proof to our commitment to establishing international collaboration in environmental journalism. This program, developed in partnership with GNMI Pakistan, aims to bridge the gap between US and Pakistani journalists and global environmental reporting standards.
Purpose
The primary objective of EcoLens is to empower US and Pakistani journalists and digital content creators by enhancing their skills in environmental journalism. By exposing them to best practices and strategies for amplifying local narratives on a global stage, we aim to develop a new generation of journalists who are well-equipped to tackle environmental issues with accuracy, depth, and global relevance.
The Activities
In this collaboration, PULSE play a pivotal role in supporting the identification and selection of credible trainer(s) to ensure high-quality training for the participants.
1. Virtual Training Session on July 18, 2024
Led by Bernardo H. Motta, a distinguished US-based trainer selected for his expertise and credibility by PULSE, this session focused on sharing international best practices in environmental journalism. Participants were introduced to:
Advanced techniques in data-driven journalism for enhanced accuracy and impact: Participants learned how to utilize data effectively to support their environmental stories. This included methods for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data to ensure their reporting is both accurate and compelling. The training emphasized the importance of using credible sources and statistical evidence to back their narratives.
Successful case studies of climate-focused stories from around the world: Through detailed case studies, participants explored how leading journalists have tackled complex environmental issues. These examples provided insights into the storytelling techniques, investigative methods, and narrative structures that have made these stories impactful and widely recognized.
A comprehensive directory of resources for accessing authentic global data and institutions: Participants received a curated list of reliable sources for environmental data, including international databases, research institutions, and governmental agencies. This resource directory is intended to help journalists find accurate and up-to-date information to support their reporting.
Strategies for Amplifying Local Narratives Globally
This segment emphasized the importance of elevating local environmental stories to global platforms. Participants learned:
